SUITLAND, Md. (September 10, 2021) The Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) honor guard flanks a memorial wreath during the 9/11 20th anniversary ceremony at the National Maritime Intelligence Center. Eight ONI shipmates serving in the Chief of Naval Operations Intelligence Plot in the Pentagon perished during the terrorist attacks that day: Cmdr. Dan Shanower, Lt. Cmdr Vince Tolbert, Lt. Jonas Panik, Lt. Darin Pontell, Petty Officer 1st Class Julian Cooper, Angela Houtz, Brady Howell, and Gerard Moran.

Eight chief petty officers were promoted in a February ceremony at the Office of Naval Intelligence.
Each year ONI remembers eight ONI shipmates who lost their lives during the terrorist attack at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. A commemoration ceremony is held in the Remembrance Garden of the National Maritime Intelligence Center. Capt. Tom Bortmes was ONI’s commanding officer when the attacks occurred and he has attended each remembrance ceremony since the first one was held in October 2001.
