A native of Independence, Kentucky, Capt. Adam Johnson graduated from the University of Louisville in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He enlisted in the Navy in November of 1997, and, after completing boot camp in January 1998, graduated Navy Officer Candidate School in June.

 

His operational tours include serving as the intelligence officer for Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 136 in Atsugi, Japan from 1999-2001 where he completed multiple cruises aboard the now decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). From 2001-2004, he served as the information systems and intelligence department head at SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team (SDV) 2, deploying twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). As Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11’s targeting officer from 2007-2009, he supported combat operations in both OEF and OIF and completed two cruises aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

 

His staff tours include U.S. Central Command’s Joint Intelligence Center from 2004-2007, where he served as an analyst for both the Iraq and Regional-Maritime teams. From 2010-2013, he was stationed at the U.S. European Command headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, serving as the Joint Intelligence and Operations Center’s intelligence watch officer before running the intelligence director’s (J2) front office.

 

He was then assigned to be the intelligence officer to the chief of naval operation’s strategic studies group in Newport, Rhode Island, from 2013-2016, a role that transformed his perspective on innovation and leadership. Johnson served in Busan, South Korea as the assistant chief of staff for Intelligence (N2) to Commander, Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) from June 2016 to August 2018. In December 2018, he reported to the U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM) J2 in Stuttgart, Germany, where he served as the foreign influence branch chief before moving to the commander’s action group and then to the analysis department as the operations officer. Johnson reported for duty as the assistant chief of staff for intelligence to Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet in Yokosuka, Japan from June 2021 to April 2023.

 

Captain Johnson is a proud graduate of the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff Course at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and earned a master’s degree in adult education from Kansas State University.
