SUITLAND, Md - (Sept. 11, 2019) Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) Commander Rear Adm. Kelly Aeschbach and retired Capt. Tom Bortmes lay a memorial wreath during a Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony at the National Maritime Intelligence Center. The ceremony honors eight ONI shipmates who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks at the Pentagon. Bortmes was ONI’s commanding officer in 2001 when the terrorist attacks occurred and had only served in that role since July 6. Following the wreath-laying, a bell tolled as the names were read: Cmdr. Dan Shanower, Lt. Cmdr. Vince Tolbert, Lt. Jonas Panik, Lt. Darin Pontell, Petty Officer 1st Class Julian Cooper, Angela Houtz, Brady Howell, and Gerard Moran. (190911-N-MS181-001 U.S. Navy photo by ONI Media Services/Released)
