Each year ONI remembers eight ONI shipmates who lost their lives during the terrorist attack at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. A commemoration ceremony is held in the Remembrance Garden of the National Maritime Intelligence Center. Capt. Tom Bortmes was ONI’s commanding officer when the attacks occurred and he has attended each remembrance ceremony since the first one was held in October 2001. Pictured here, Bortmes and ONI Commander Rear Adm. Kelly Aeschbach place a wreath in the garden where a marker bears the names and pictures of the Naval Intelligence professionals who passed that day: Cmdr. Dan Shanower, Lt. Cmdr. Vince Tolbert, Lt. Jonas Panik, Lt. Darin Pontell, Petty Officer 1st Class Julian Cooper, Angela Houtz, Brady Howell, and Gerry Moran. A bell tolled as each name was read.
